NORTHAMPTON, EAST LONGMEADOW AND SPRINGFIELD, MASSACHUSETTS-Less than two months ago, the ADA announced the release of the updated version, of its recommendations for dental radiographic examinations produced via collaboration with the FDA.

Titled “Dental Radiographic Examinations: Recommendations for Patient Selection and Limiting Radiation Exposure,” the ADA’s suggestions are to be used alongside dentists’ experience and expertise. Changes were last made to the report in 2004.

The ADA recommends that dentists use the report as a guideline and handle radiographic examinations on a case-by-case basis.

“Radiographs are valuable diagnostic tools that can help dentists detect and assess oral problems,” said Dr. Lisa Emirzian, a Northampton dentist. “It is important that their benefits are weighed against the risks and that the exposure to radiation is minimized. We are proud to offer digital imaging techniques to our patients that significantly reduce exposure.”

The updated report was peer reviewed by several professional organizations, like the American Academy of Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology, American Association of Public Health Dentistry, and American Academy of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology.

Several nondental associations, such as the FDA and National Council on Radiation Protection and Measurements, were also asked to examine the new recommendations.

Changes made to the ADA’s report include:

  • The use of the same strength thyroid collar for children, females who are of childbearing age and pregnant women
  • Recommendations for shielding that mirror those established by the National Council on Radiation Protection and Measurements
  • Coverage of topics, like receptor selection and technique charts, not included in the CSA’s 2006 report

General dentistry professionals and specialists like Dr. Vincent Mariano and Dr. Emirzian strive to protect you, and ensure that they inform you of the side effects of all procedures. You can have the comfort of knowing they will only take dental X-rays if necessary. Call your local dentist today for more information on the ADA’s updated radiographic recommendations.
