Do you dread others seeing your teeth? Are you embarrassed by your smile? You do not have to continue living in fear of exposing your smile’s appearance. It is time for a change.

“Whether people have oral health problems or simply do not like the look of their teeth, undesirable smiles can cause a number of insecurities,” said Dr. Lisa Emirzian, a Northampton, MA esthetic dentist at EMA Dental. “Smile makeovers can help eliminate tooth-related anxiety and even improve overall oral health.”

Smile makeovers use scientific and artistic techniques to improve the appearance of smiles as well as their structure and oral health. When the structure of your smile is enhanced or restored, your facial structure will also improve. Restoration will also lead to a reduced chance of suffering from additional oral health problems in the future.

Typically, smile makeovers involve a combination of two or more procedures, including the following:

  1. Crowns – “caps” that are placed over teeth, and are used to protect or repair weak teeth and change the look of misshapen or discolored teeth.
  2. Porcelain veneers – custom-made porcelain “shells” that are utilized to change the color and/or shape of teeth. They are natural-looking and stain-resistant.
  3. Implant-retained dentures – partial or full dentures that are stabilized with the help of two to four dental implants.
  4. Invisalign – invisible braces that use a series of removable clear trays to align teeth.
  5. Bonding – tooth-colored resin that is applied to the surface of teeth to whiten and lengthen teeth, as well as eliminate gaps between teeth without the use of braces, repair decayed teeth and fill small cavities.
  6. Teeth whitening – ZOOM! whitening, custom trays, or 30-minute or 60-minute in-office treatment options that help rid teeth of stains from wine, tobacco, coffee and more.

Experienced esthetic specialists like Amherst cosmetic dentist Dr. Emirzian can help you determine the smile makeover option that is best for you. Not only are they concerned about providing you with the smile you have always wanted, but also improving and maintaining your oral health. If you are ready to change your smile, do not wait another day. Contact EMA Dental today to learn what the first step is toward your dream smile.

Five Reasons Why You May Want to Consider Veneers over Invisalign

When it comes to your options for a straighter smile, traditional braces and invisible braces probably come to mind. What you may not know, though, is that the alignment of your teeth can also be improved with the help of porcelain veneers.

“Depending on the results they desire and the current state of their smile, many patients who desire straighter teeth are not limited to traditional treatment options like clear braces,” said Dr. Lisa Emirzian, a cosmetic specialist and dentist at EMA Dental in Springfield, MA. “There are a number of advantages for both and dentists can help to determine what the best treatment is depending on individual goals.”

Veneers are facings that are composed of either composite or porcelain tooth-colored materials. Porcelain veneers are used more often than composite veneers at cosmetic dental practices like EMA Dental because they last longer. They are bonded to the front of teeth, and used to change their size, shape and color. Porcelain veneers can also be utilized to bridge gaps and correct misalignment.

Invisalign, on the other hand, changes the actual alignment of teeth. It can be used for minor to severe cases. The following are five reasons why some patients in Amherst choose porcelain veneers over Invisalign:

  1. Porcelain veneers can improve the color, shape and size of your teeth in addition to aligning them.
  2. Your desired results can be achieved quicker with porcelain veneers. Invisalign treatments usually span six to 12 months.
  3. Porcelain veneers can strengthen your teeth that are weak due to fillings and other oral issues.
  4. Veneers are virtually painless.
  5. You will have to wear a retainer after your Invisalign treatment is complete, whereas porcelain veneers require no follow-up and can last as long as 15 years with proper care and maintenance.

If you desire a straighter smile, talk to your local cosmetic dentist before choosing a treatment option. Professional cosmetic specialists like Dr. Emirzian have the experience necessary to assess the current state of your smile and recommend the treatment option that is best for you. To learn more about Invisalign, porcelain veneers and other cosmetic procedures, like dental implants, call EMA Dentaltoday.

Cosmetic Dentistry: The Esthetic Benefits of Bonding and Crowns

Cosmetic Dentistry NorthamptonNORTHAMPTON, EAST LONGMEADOW AND SPRINGFIELD, MASSACHUSETTS
Bonding and crowns are dental procedures that are often confused, and their full range of benefits is not often fully understood. The procedures are used in different scenarios and for esthetic reasons in addition to improving the health of teeth.

“Even though bonding and crowns are similar, the health and cosmetic problems they address are disparate,” said Dr. Lisa Emirzian, a dentist in Springfield, MA that specializes in cosmetic procedures and owns EMA Dental. “It is important that patients know the difference between the two and which is appropriate for their dental needs.”

Bonding is a procedure that applies tooth-colored resin, which is usually made of a composite plastic material, to teeth using a special light that “bonds” the material to the surface of teeth. It is used to protect exposed roots, fill small cavities and repair decayed teeth. Bonding may also be utilized to change the appearance of teeth, from the color to shape and length. It can repair chipped teeth, whiten and lengthen teeth, and close gaps between teeth without using braces or aligners, according to cosmetic dentist, Dr. Lisa Emirzian, who also offers services to patients in Northampton, MA. The resin is molded and shaped to your teeth, so they are natural-looking following the bonding process.

Bonding is a good option if you are seeking to improve the look of your teeth without an excessive financial investment and undergoing an involved dental procedure. Bonding is one of the least expensive cosmetic procedures and typically does not require the use of anesthesia. The process can be completed in a short amount of time at a local dental office, like EMA Dental.

Crowns, on the other hand, are “caps” that cover the portion of teeth that lies above the gum line. They are typically composed of porcelain or ceramic, and cemented to teeth or dental implants. Crowns are used to protect weak teeth, hold a bridge in place, support a tooth with a large filling and hold together cracked teeth. They can also enhance the appearance of teeth by covering misshapen and discolored teeth, producing a tooth whitening effect.

There are temporary and permanent crown options. Temporary crowns are typically used until permanent crowns are created because permanent crowns require several office visits. Crowns typically last between five and 15 years. The better your oral hygiene regimen, the longer your crown should last and remain in place.

Esthetic-focused family dentists like Dr. Emirzian can help you achieve the smile you have always wanted. They have the knowledge and experience necessary to assist you in choosing the appropriate procedure for your oral health and cosmetic dentistry needs. If you are interested in bonding or crowns, or want to learn more about the procedures, call EMA Dental today to schedule an appointment.

Cosmetic Dentistry: Porcelain Veneers and Why They May be a Good Option for You

Springfield, MA Porcelain VeneersNORTHAMPTON, EAST LONGMEADOW AND SPRINGFIELD, MASSACHUSETTS — Did you know that you do not have to undergo cosmetic surgery to change the appearance of your smile? Fortunately there are several nonsurgical options, including porcelain veneers that can produce the same effects as surgical procedures and give you the smile you have always wanted.

Porcelain veneers are thin, ceramic shells that are made according to the shape and size of your teeth. They are tooth-colored, and adhered to the top and front of your teeth using dental adhesive.

“Porcelain veneers are commonly used to improve the appearance of teeth that are broken, misshapen, discolored or misaligned,” said Dr. Lisa Emirzian, a Northampton, MA dentist at EMA Dental who focuses on cosmetic treatments. “They are a good option for patients who desire fast, dramatic results without the use of anesthesia.”

Below are some other reasons why you should consider utilizing porcelain veneers for achieving your dream smile:

  1. Because they are tooth-colored, porcelain veneers are natural-looking. No one but you and your dentist will know that you are wearing veneers.
  2. Even though porcelain veneers are thin, they are strong. Cracking or chipping is not typical.
  3. Porcelain veneers are highly stain-resistant, so with the proper oral health regimen, your new smile will be just as white several years down the road as it is now.
  4. Any space that exists between your teeth can be closed without the need for braces. Because porcelain veneers are tailored to your dental needs, they can be made to bridge gaps.

Five Tips for Keeping Teeth White

NORTHAMPTON, PIONEER VALLEY AND SPRINGFIELD, MASSACHUSETTS — No doubt an important characteristic of a beautiful smile is its brilliance. Eye-catching smiles are not only healthy, but also bright. But how do you achieve pearly whites that are sure to light up any room?

“Aesthetically appealing smiles begin with good oral health,” said Dr. Lisa Emirzian, a Pioneer Valley dentist and esthetic dentistry specialist at EMA Dental. “The better patients take care of their teeth, the more likely they are to have a white smile.”

Besides maintaining good oral health, there are five effortless and affordable ways you can achieve the luminous smile you have always wanted.

  1. Eat crisp fruits and vegetables on a regular basis. Their abrasiveness helps remove tooth stains. Fruits and vegetables that are known as “nature’s toothbrush” include apples, celery and raw carrots.
  2. Avoid consuming dark-colored drinks like sodas, coffee and red wine. These types of beverages easily stain teeth. If you choose to drink them, use a straw and wait at least 30 minutes after consumption to brush so the acids found in these beverages are not spread around your mouth.
  3. Stay away from tobacco products like cigarettes and chewing tobacco, which not only discolor teeth over time, but can also increase your chances of developing gum disease and oral cancer.
  4. Invest in a good tooth brush and replace it every two to three months so as much plaque as possible is lifted from teeth, and bacteria is not transferred to and moved around your mouth.
  5. Take advantage of professional whitening treatments offered by cosmetic dentistry practices like EMA Dental. EMA Dental offers 30-minute and 60-minute in-office treatments, custom trays for at-home whitening and ZOOM! whitening. Professional whitening treatments can offer dramatic results in a short amount of time.

Cosmetic dentists like Dr. Emirzian desire to help you have the smile of your dreams and offer a variety of services as to meet every aesthetic need. That is why they provide treatments, like Invisalign, smile makeovers, bonding and ZOOM!whitening. EMA Dental Prosthodontist Explains Dental Implants and Their Benefits

NORTHAMPTON, EAST LONGMEADOW AND SPRINGFIELD, MASSACHUSETTS — You may be under the impression that the only options for replacing your missing teeth are dentures and bridges. Think again. Dental implants have become a more popular method for replacing natural teeth and restoring self-confidence.

Dental implants are metal posts that are placed into the jawbone via surgery and lie beneath your gum. Once the posts or frames are positioned, the replacement teeth can be fixed to them.

“Implants are designed to take the place of missing teeth, especially where there are no adjacent teeth to attach a bridge to,” said Dr. Vincent Mariano, aNorthampton, MA dentist and prosthodontist who offers a variety of esthetic and restorative services, including porcelain veneers. “They are a good alternative to dentures and bridges, especially for patients who have a regular oral health regimen.”

There are two types of dental implants used by dentists: mini-implants and implant-retained dentures. Mini-implants are smaller in diameter than regular dental implants and help stabilize your lower dentures. They cost less than full-size implants, usually do not involve a gum incision and can be placed within a few hours. Mini-implants can replace individual missing teeth, acting as an inexpensive and permanent solution.

Implant-retained dentures are full or partial dentures that are held in place via two to four dental implants. They are typically used if there are no teeth in the jaw. Traditional dentures tend to shift, causing difficulties in speaking and eating. They can also cause discomfort or may not even be an option for replacing your missing teeth due to sore spots, gagging and other oral problems.

Not only are dental implants a common alternative to dentures, they are also being used in the place of bridges. Bridges require that there are teeth adjacent to those that are missing, which may not be the case in your mouth. Permanent bridges are placed using crowns or a dental bonding agent, as compared to the metal posts that are inserted into the jawbone during the dental implant placement process.

Regardless of whether you choose dentures, bridges or dental implants to replace your missing teeth, what is important is that you have missing teeth in your mouth replaced. Replacing lost teeth can restore your facial structure to its original appearance, decrease your chance of developing gum disease and improve your speech.

Prosthodontists like Amherst dentistry professional Dr. Mariano of EMA Dental are committed to helping you improve your oral health and achieve the smile you have always wanted. They are trained to identify and utilize the best method for replacing your missing teeth and restoring your current teeth. They are glad to help you get on the right track toward reconstructing your smile. Call EMA Dental today to learn more about dental implants and schedule your consultation.

NORTHAMPTON, EAST LONGMEADOW AND SPRINGFIELD, MASSACHUSETTS —This year’s National Prosthodontics Awareness Week is quickly approaching. During the week of April 7-13, prosthodontists everywhere, including Northampton MA Dentist Dr. Vincent Mariano of EMA Dental, will make an extra effort to remind patients of the significance of good oral health, and the valuable training and experience prosthodontists have to offer.

Prosthodontics is a dental specialty that focuses on restoring current dental structures and replacing missing ones. When you choose to initiate treatment with a prosthodontist, the process includes examination and identification of the problem(s), development of a treatment plan and options (when possible), restoration and preservation. Prosthodontic services from Springfield, MA family dentistry practices like EMA Dental in Springfield, MA include dental implants, dentures, crowns, tooth-colored fillings and bridgework.

NPAW is held to bring attention to the little-known specialty of prosthodontics and how important it is that you take care of your oral health.

“It is essential that you maintain your oral health and reach out to a prosthodontist for comprehensive restorative procedures or tooth replacement needs,” said Dr. Mariano. “When missing teeth are replaced and the force of your bite is evenly distributed, it is less likely that remaining teeth will move, and the shape and structure of your face will be maintained.”

They pride themselves on offering services that are built to serve your needs and give you a beautiful smile. 5 Reasons Why Oral Cancer Screenings are Important

NORTHAMPTON, EAST LONGMEADOW AND SPRINGFIELD, MASSACHUSETTS —

With Oral Cancer Awareness Month right around the corner, it is important to remember that cavities and gum disease are not the only oral health problems you should be concerned with preventing and monitoring.

There are two types of oral cancer: oral cavity cancer and oropharyngeal cancer. Oral cancer can affect any part of the oral cavity, including the throat, lips, mouth and tongue.

The American Cancer Society estimates that in 2013, approximately 36,000 people in the United States will get oral cancer. Of those 36,000 people, the ACS estimates that 6,850 of them will die from oral cancer. (http://www.cancer.org/cancer/oralcavityandoropharyngealcancer/detailedguide/oral-cavity-and-oropharyngeal-cancer-key-statistics)

“Fortunately, there are several ways that you can try to prevent oral cancer from developing,” said Dr. Vincent Mariano, a Springfield, MA dentist who specializes indental implants and other Prosthodontic services. “Practices include abstaining from alcohol and tobacco use, avoiding prolonged UV light exposure, and eating a diet rich in fruits and vegetables.”
There are several signs of oral cancer that you should look for, especially if it runs in your family, including:

  • Ear pain
  • Unexplained mouth bleeding
  • Soreness in the back of your throat
  • Lumps, swellings or rough spots anywhere in your mouth
  • Unexplained numbness
  • White, red or speckled patches in your mouth

While some early cases of oral cancer may cause you to experience symptoms and seek medical attention, other cancers may not produce symptoms until they are in an advanced stage. This is where oral cancer screenings come into play. Other reasons why regular screenings are important include:

• You may not always be able to detect abnormal areas by looking at your mouth in the mirror. Your dentist and hygienist are trained to identify areas of concern and have advanced testing techniques available if needed.

• Your treatment options are based on the stage of the oral cancer, so the sooner the cancer is detected, the better the chance you will not need as extensive of a treatment.

• More than 25 percent of oral cancer patients do not use tobacco products or drink alcohol, so there is a chance that you will develop oral cancer even if those products are not a part of your lifestyle.

• Depending on your symptoms, your dentist may need to perform a head and neck examination because oral cancer can easily spread to your lymph nodes due to their proximity to your mouth and oropharynx.

Once your Northampton MA family dentistry practitioner identifies the stage of your oral cancer, he/she can determine what treatment method will be the most effective. Treatment options include surgery, palliative treatment, radiation therapy and targeted therapy.

Dentists in Northampton, MA, like Dr. Mariano and Dr. Lisa Emirzian, care about your well-being. They are dedicated to the betterment and maintenance of your oral health. They will be happy to perform an oral cancer screening at your next checkup. Call today to set up an appointment and learn more about oral cancer.

ADA Changes Dentists’ Recommendations for Dental X-rays

NORTHAMPTON, EAST LONGMEADOW AND SPRINGFIELD, MASSACHUSETTS-Less than two months ago, the ADA announced the release of the updated version, of its recommendations for dental radiographic examinations produced via collaboration with the FDA.

Titled “Dental Radiographic Examinations: Recommendations for Patient Selection and Limiting Radiation Exposure,” the ADA’s suggestions are to be used alongside dentists’ experience and expertise. Changes were last made to the report in 2004.

The ADA recommends that dentists use the report as a guideline and handle radiographic examinations on a case-by-case basis.

“Radiographs are valuable diagnostic tools that can help dentists detect and assess oral problems,” said Dr. Lisa Emirzian, a Northampton dentist. “It is important that their benefits are weighed against the risks and that the exposure to radiation is minimized. We are proud to offer digital imaging techniques to our patients that significantly reduce exposure.”

The updated report was peer reviewed by several professional organizations, like the American Academy of Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology, American Association of Public Health Dentistry, and American Academy of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology.

Several nondental associations, such as the FDA and National Council on Radiation Protection and Measurements, were also asked to examine the new recommendations.

Changes made to the ADA’s report include:

  • The use of the same strength thyroid collar for children, females who are of childbearing age and pregnant women
  • Recommendations for shielding that mirror those established by the National Council on Radiation Protection and Measurements
  • Coverage of topics, like receptor selection and technique charts, not included in the CSA’s 2006 report

General dentistry professionals and specialists like Dr. Vincent Mariano and Dr. Emirzian strive to protect you, and ensure that they inform you of the side effects of all procedures. You can have the comfort of knowing they will only take dental X-rays if necessary. Call your local dentist today for more information on the ADA’s updated radiographic recommendations.
