Full Dentures, Amherst and Springfield

To replace a mouth full of teeth, a complete denture is necessary. It is a dental appliance that is removable for cleaning, but provides all of the functions of natural teeth such as chewing, speech and support for the cheeks and lips.

Made of acrylic, there are two ways to make dentures.

  • Traditional dentures are not made until after all of the natural teeth have been removed and healing is completed.
  • The other method is called an "immediate denture," and the gum tissues heal underneath the denture

An upper denture is made of flesh-colored acrylic and covers the roof of the mouth. Lower dentures are made of a combination of plastic and porcelain and is horseshoe shaped so there is room for the tongue to function correctly.

Sometimes your dentist will recommend a complete denture, which attaches to implants, giving you a more secure fit. Either way, over time, dentures will need to be replaced. They will wear down and adjustments will be needed to maintain a normal jaw alignment due to slow changes in the bones and gums as a result of the initial tooth extraction.

When you have full dentures, seeing your dentist regularly is just as important as when you had a full mouth of teeth. EMA Dental specializes in Northampton dental implants and can help create a natural looking smile to last you several years.
