Abscessed teeth can be saved. Endodontics, more commonly known as root canals, is the best option for many patients experiencing the pain caused by abscessed teeth. That pain is caused when the vital tissues inside the tooth are damaged or exposed. This pulp can be exposed through cracks, decay or very deep fillings. When it comes in contact with cold or hot foods or beverages, or even just the saliva in the mouth, it sends pain signals to the brain that something must be fixed. When the pain is severe enough, you might even be experiencing an infection inside the roots.
A root canal, designed to save the infected tooth, involves cleaning out the inner chambers of the tooth so that all bacteria is completely removed. There are specialized dental tools for this job that fit into the tight spaces found in and around the teeth. Sterilizing irrigants will also be used before the root's canals are sealed with a special filling. Digital radiography will be used to ensure the root canal was done properly.
Curved roots, mutliple roots or blocked tooth canals can make root canals more difficult. In these cases, an endodontist will need to perform the procedure. EMA Dental will refer you to a specialist's office if this is the case.
Your Northampton general dentist can then complete your treatment with a final restoration, which will most likely include a crown to protect the previously accomplished dental work.
